Bamboo / Adzuki Beans

Adzuki Beans, known as Bamboo Beans here in Madagascar are known for their mild taste and are considered as nutritional powerhouse. There are 2 qualities available here, Red & Green.

Season: Aug – Nov

Bamboo Beans are also called Adzuki Beans, Rice Bean and Moth Bean. They are highly popular in the market because of their rich dietary benefits. Some of the major Bamboo Beans supplier countries are:

  • China: China is the world's largest Adzuki Beans exporter and producer, accounting for more than 67% of global production. China has cultivated adzuki beans for almost 2,000 years. The Yangtze River Valley is a major hub of production.
  • Japan: Japan is the second-largest  Bamboo Beans supplier, accounting for roughly 10% of global production. Adzuki beans are Japan's second most important legume, after soybeans.
  • South Korea: South Korea is the world's third largest Adzuki Beans supplier, with 25,000 hectares of dedicated land. Their different "ttangkong" and "patkong" variations are highlighted in meals such as patjuk (porridge) and bingsu (shaved ice). The beans are culturally significant, representing longevity and prosperity.
  • Taiwan: Taiwan, with 15,000 hectares, principally cultivates the "hongdou" cultivar, which is recognized for its slightly sweet flavor. Hongdou tang (soup) and tangyuan (rice dumplings) are popular. Interestingly, due to import restrictions, Taiwan places a strong emphasis on home production of high-quality adzuki beans.
  • Madagascar: Bamboo Beans cultivation in Madagascar benefits from suitable weather in areas such as Antsiranana, Toamasina, and Mahajanga. Traditional approaches benefit tiny farmers. Adzuki Beans exporters  are catering to Asian markets, with over 10,000 metric tons produced each year.

Culinary use:

  • Sweet Red Bean Paste: Adzuki beans are commonly sweetened and mashed into a paste that is used as a filler in East Asian desserts including mochi, buns, and pancakes.
  • Soups and Stews: Adzuki beans are a popular ingredient in East Asian soups and stews, giving them a rich, nutty flavor and creamy texture.
  • Salads: They can be cooked and mixed into salads for added protein and texture.
  • Vegetarian Burgers: Adzuki beans can be mashed and molded into patties to create vegetarian burgers.
  • Desserts: Adzuki beans are used in a variety of desserts, including ice cream, puddings, and cakes, particularly in Asian cuisine.

Non culinary uses:

  • Natural Dye: Adzuki beans contain anthocyanins, a natural pigment that can be used to dye fabrics and textiles in a variety of pink and red colors. This traditional dyeing technique has been reported in several civilizations, including China and Japan.
  • Traditional medicine: While not entirely supported by modern scientific study, Adzuki beans are utilized in traditional medical practices by many cultures, and are typically claimed to improve digestion, detoxification, and even breastfeeding.
  • Cosmetics: Adzuki bean powder's somewhat gritty texture makes it suitable for use as an exfoliator in various natural cosmetics and skincare products. However, it is vital to remember that its efficacy requires additional scientific validation.
  • Animal Feed: Adzuki beans, being legumes, are high in protein and other vital elements. They can be processed into feed for animals and poultry.

Improved Blood Sugar Control: Adzuki beans include fiber and protein, both of which help regulate blood sugar levels. Fiber slows glucose absorption, reducing blood sugar increases, and protein allows the body to use insulin more effectively.

Reduced Risk of Heart Disease: Adzuki beans include a variety of nutrients that may benefit heart health.

  • High Fiber: Fiber helps lower LDL ("bad") cholesterol levels, lowering the risk of heart disease.
  • Potassium: This element regulates blood pressure and promotes proper heart function.
  • Folate: This B vitamin aids in the breakdown of homocysteine, an amino acid that, when present in high amounts, has been associated with an increased risk of heart disease.

Improved Digestion: Adzuki beans include both soluble and insoluble fiber.

  • Soluble fiber: Soluble fiber creates a gel-like substance in the digestive tract, encouraging easy digestion and a sense of fullness.
  • Insoluble fiber: This form of fiber bulks up the stool and promotes regularity, lowering the risk of constipation.

Other Potential Benefits: Adzuki beans are a good source of a variety of other nutrients, which may contribute to:

  • Bone health: Because they include calcium, phosphate, potassium, and magnesium.
  • Muscle function: Protein and magnesium contribute to muscle function.

Reduced risk of birth defects: Adzuki beans are high in folate, which is beneficial for pregnant women.

Savory dishes:

  • Adzuki Bean Curry: This cozy and tasty curry has adzuki beans, veggies, and your favorite spices. You can modify the spice level to your liking.
  • Adzuki Bean Burgers: A nutritious and tasty alternative to regular beef burgers. Mash cooked adzuki beans with your favorite herbs and spices, then form patties and cook on the grill, pan, or in the oven.
