The term "pink pepper" can refer to two different things; these are the pink peppercorn which is the dried berry of several different trees, most commonly the Brazilian pepper (Schinus terebinthifolius). These trees are native to South America, but they are now grown in many other parts of the world, including Africa, Asia, and the Mediterranean. The other one is Pink Pepper Madagascar, also known as Baies rose. These are the dried berries of the spindle tree (Euonymus phellomanus), which is native to Madagascar.

Here are some of the countries that are major pink pepper suppliers:

  1. Brazil: Brazil is the world's leading producer of pink peppercorns, holding the account of about 70% of global production.
  2. Peru: Peru is the runner up producer of pink peppercorns.
  3. Madagascar: Madagascar is considered to be the main Pink Pepper exporter & producer of baies rose.
  4. Vietnam: Although it has entered the field recently, production is growing rapidly.

Culinary Uses:

  • Spicy Dishes: The pinch of sweet and peppery taste of Pink Pepper Madagascar gives unique depth to various savory dishes. Grind or crush them to use in Fish and Seafood like salmon, tuna, scallops, and shrimp paired beautifully with pink pepper's subtle sweetness and peppery kick.
  • Desserts: The contrasting sweetness of pink pepper makes it a surprising yet delightful addition which also enhances the richness of chocolate desserts like mousse, truffles, and bark with a hint of pink pepper.

Non-Culinary Uses:

  • Incense: The subtle, slightly fruity fragrance of pink pepper makes it a lovely addition to potpourri blends and incense mixes.
  • Beauty Aids: Natural skincare products incorporate pink pepper extract for its potential free anti-oxidant and inflammation-reducing properties. However, consult a dermatologist before using it topically, since pink peppercorns cause rashes and irritation to those with sensitive skin types.

Aromatherapy: The essential oil extracted from Pink Pepper Madagascar is used in aromatherapy for its soothing and relaxing properties.

Antioxidant properties: Pink pepper consists of compounds like anthocyanins and gallic acid, which possess antioxidant properties, potentially aiding in cell protection and reducing free radical damage.

Anti-pathogenic Effects: Some studies suggest some pink pepper extracts exhibit antimicrobial activity against certain bacteria and fungi. Although evidence is limited.

Metabolic Support: Traditional uses of pink pepper in various cultures prove it beneficial for digestive ailments like bloating and constipation.

Inflammation Reducing Properties: Various studies indicate potential anti-inflammatory effects of pink pepper extracts, but further research is required to clarify their effectiveness and mechanisms.

Pink pepper, both pink peppercorns and baies rose, has a unique sweet and peppery element to decorate savory and sweet dishes. Mentioned below are some recipe ideas that highlight the uniqueness and varieties of Pink pepper:
